Sink and appliance cutouts
Take great care when installing sinks into timber worktops, due to the possibility of water penetration into the joints and timber if incorrect procedures and materials are used.
When positioning and making a cutout for a hob always follow the manufacturers instructions for sizes and safety clearances etc.
To maintain rigidity and strength observe minimum distances:
- from cutout to end of joint = 100mm min. except Belfast type sinks.
- from Belfast type cutout to end of top = 300mm min.
- from front or back edges = 50mm min.
- between adjacent cutouts = 100mm min. and this narrow strip must be supported underneath with a plate or rail. |

Cutouts for lay-on sinks and hobs must have a clearance of 3mm per side, 6mm overall, for cross grain timber movement.
If possible round all corners of cutouts rather than cutting them square. |

Undermounted sinks should have at least a 7 - 10mm overhang all round.
For accuracy, quality and safety, cut outs for undermounted sinks should be bench cut using jigs and a router, not a jigsaw.
Prepare the worktop to take the sink fixing clamps at the same time as the undermounted cutout is being made. |

Belfast type sinks
The worktop should overhang the edges of a Belfast type sink by 10mm at the sides and back. The depth of the cutout should allow the sink to project at the front edge by half the sink wall thickness.

Trial fitting
Put all of the worktop pieces onto the base units for a trial fitting, and do a dry run without glue etc. before finally assembling the worktop.

Undermounted and lay on sink installation |

| Run a medium sized bead of clear low modulous silicon around the rim of the sink, offer it up and fix it under the cutout with sink clips. |
|
|
On undermounted and Belfast type sinks add more silicon as required to form a smooth cove between the inside of the sink and the underside of the worktop all round the opening.
With lay-on sinks if no seal is supplied, use a generous bead of clear low modulous silicon between the rim and the worktop.

Wall seals
Form a seal between the worktop, upstand and adjacent walls with clear low modulous silicon.
If the walls are to be tiled, place a temporary spacer on the worktop to form a 3- 4 mm gap across the bottom of the tiles.
After tiling and grouting seal the gap with low modulous silicon to stop moisture and allow the timber movement. |
